New Democrats demand Harper explain cost of war

OTTAWA – Today, Paul Dewar (Ottawa-Centre) says Conservatives and Liberals must explain how they plan to pay for the Afghanistan mission to which they have committed Canada.

“Throughout this campaign, Stephen Harper and Stephane Dion have argued that New Democrat plans to invest in hiring doctors, in protecting jobs, in helping families are irresponsible, said Dewar. “Today, the Parliamentary Budget Office has revealed that the cost of the mission in Afghanistan has expanded from initial estimates of $8 billion for a six year mission to $18.1 billion.”

New Democrats have argued that in the face of deteriorating lives for average Afghans, of NATO leadership questioning our course, that it’s time for a new strategy for Afghanistan.

Tough times demand leadership to pull us together: Layton

‘Working families need leadership that’s on their side’

SUDBURY – Speaking to a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, New Democrat leader Jack Layton today blasted Prime Minister Stephen Harper for ignoring the interests of everyday families, and failing to show leadership in difficult times.

“Today, ordinary working families are worried about their savings, their pensions, their homes, and their jobs. They’re having a tough time making ends meet – and five million Canadians don’t even have a family doctor,” said Layton.

The New Democrat leader slammed Harper’s indifference to the concerns of everyday families: “Make no mistake, Stephen Harper picked his side. He looks out for big oil and big banks, and gives away billions of dollars in tax breaks to his corporate friends. Working people deserve better.”

Layton was on the campaign trail in Thompson, Manitoba in the riding of Churchill. Speaking to supporters, Layton said “ordinary Canadians are worried about their savings, their pensions, their homes, and their jobs. They need to know they will be safe and secure.” The New Democrat leader added “my top priority is to protect your savings, pensions, homes and jobs. We’ll re-regulate banks, make sure no one is gambling with your savings, invest in the real economy, and protect health care and education.”

Everyday families can count on us: Layton

EDMONTON – New Democrat Leader Jack Layton today blasted Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s newly-unveiled platform for failing to protect the interests of Canadian families in tough economic times.

“Ordinary working families are worried about their savings, their pensions, their homes, and their jobs,” said Layton. “They want to know if they are going to be safe and secure.”

New Democrats will “re-regulate the banks, and make sure no one is gambling with your savings. We’ll invest in the real economy to create and protect jobs.”

Harper fails everyday families: Layton

WINNIPEG – At a rally of hundreds of supporters, New Democrat Leader Jack Layton today accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper of unveiling a platform that does nothing to protect everyday families.

“Ordinary working families are worried about their savings, their pensions, their homes, and their jobs,” said Layton. “They want to know if they are going to be safe and secure.”

“In times like these, working families need leadership that’s on their side” said Layton. “Now is the time for that leadership. Not denials.”

The New Democrat leader slammed Harper’s do-nothing attitude. Layton said as Prime Minister, he would “ensure we protect the savings, pensions, homes and jobs of ordinary Canadians.”

This election is about coming together to defeat Harper

At a ‘townhall’ meeting in Courtenay, Layton said, “This election has come down to two real choices.

Layton urges voters of all parties to join with him to defeat Harper

Layton calls on voters of other parties to support New Democrats to defeat Harper

CHARLOTTETOWN - At a campaign rally at Charlottetown Airport today, New Democrat Leader Jack Layton urged supporters of the Liberal, Green, and the old Progressive Conservative parties to “come together and defeat Stephen Harper, by supporting New Democrats in this election.”

Layton slammed the Prime Minister for his “We don’t have to do anything” attitude to the recent US financial crisis. Layton said that Harper is not going to do anything to protect your jobs, your pensions, and the home you live in.”

“Yesterday, Harper was telling Canadians he needed a majority or we would all be in trouble,” said Layton. The New Democrat leader reminded the Prime Minister that he had an effective majority over the past two years because “Mr. Dion supported you 43 times on everything you wanted to do.”

NDP Launches Saskatchewan Platform

Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar Candidate Nettie Wiebe unveiled the NDP platform today, a plan that puts Saskatchewan families first while maintaining balanced budgets in each year of the mandate.

“Jack Layton’s New Democrats believe the needs of Saskatchewan people sitting at kitchen tables should come before the needs of those sitting around corporate board room tables,” Wiebe said. “The NDP plan reverses the Conservatives’ reckless $50 billion in corporate tax cuts and instead invests this money in the priorities of Saskatchewan families - education, health care, infrastructure, agriculture and the environment.”

SYDNEY - At a campaign rally at Sydney Airport today, New Democrat Leader Jack Layton called on supporters of the Liberal, Green, and the old Progressive Conservative parties to “come together and defeat Stephen Harper, by supporting New Democrats in this election.”

Layton blasted Harper for his “We don’t have to do anything” attitude to the recent US financial crisis “one of the worst economic shocks in history.” Layton said that Harper either “doesn’t care or he’s just not up to the job.”

The New Democrat leader reminded the Prime Minister that he had an effective majority over the past two years because “Mr. Dion supported you 43 times on everything you wanted to do.”
